Keeping Promises

Titus 2:7-8 says”Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.

When it comes to vows and promises we can surely say we lack in this area. How many times have we promised someone something and later changed our minds? Pretty often if you ask me, how many times have you vowed to do something but later regret you made the promise now your trying to find a way to break it? Pretty often if you ask me, well I got some news for you and you probably won’t like it but God tells us in His word that when you and I make a vow or promise to someone we are to keep it regardless. I know hard pill to swallow but that is the word of God not mine.

Jesus said we are to make every effort to keep a promise that is why He tells us to never make vows unto the Lord for He knows we aren’t going to keep our word for we are not people of integrity. Ouch, that hurts as well. But hey God is trying to make you and I a people of integrity and He doesn’t need us going around saying one thing and doing another, that brings no glory to God what so ever.

Did you know that when we make a promise or vow and don’t honor it people mock our God? Yes, the world mocks God and say that we don’t have no God, had we have a God we would honor our word. Now to me that is a pretty hard thing to say about a child of God but it’s done all day long, we have people who don’t keep their marriage vows, we don’t keep a promise to our friends or co-workers and people who we do business with. We really do need to work in this area of our lives and stop opening up our mouths so soon.

When we break do we really know how it makes that person feels? Remember how you felt when it was done to you? You felt crushed, disappointed, that’s how that person feels so why would we want to bring that same hurt feeling to another person? Let us stop making promises that we aren’t going to keep. For some of you your saying well I have good intentions? Intentions are not good enough, for people of integrity keeps their words.

I am very guilty of this. Thank for the courage it took to write it.

I appreciate your honesty. It’s when we are honest with ourselves and God that the healing begins. Have a blessed day.
